What is the difference between a Registry-Style Marriage and a Marriage Registration?
Our Registry-Style marriages are short, personalised ceremonies that are perfect for couples who love the idea of an intimate celebration with a small number of guests. It’s like a registry marriage, but warmer, more personal, and far more convenient than travelling to the NSW Registry.
Whereas a Marriage Registration involves a celebrant, the couple, and two witnesses meeting to say the legally required words (commonly known as the “monitum” and “legal vows”) and signing the marriage certificates. While you may have guests present, it’s important to understand that a Marriage Registration is not a ceremony—it involves only the legal aspects of registering a marriage.
Do we need to be Australian citizens or permanent residents?
No, you do not need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to marry in Australia. However, you may wish to check with the authorities in your home country to ensure your Australian marriage will be recognised as valid.
How can we register our marriage in Australia?
For a marriage to be registered in Australia, the couple, two witnesses, and a celebrant must meet in person, say the minimum legal words (the monitum and vows), and sign the marriage certificates.
The celebrant then submits the completed documents to the relevant state or territory authority. Once registered, a marriage certificate can be issued, which serves as proof for legal purposes such as changing names or applying for visas.
How is Officially Yours different to a registry marriage?
Traditionally, couples seeking an affordable, stress-free option have had their marriage performed by a Marriage Officer at the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. These ceremonies are restricted to specific days and locations and are usually brief and impersonal.
Officially Yours Registry-Style Marriages and Marriage Registrations hold the same legal status as registry marriages, with the added convenience of choosing a day and location that suits you.
Do you have a refund policy?
If you choose to cancel your ceremony, we will accommodate your request and process a refund where applicable. Our refund policy will be shared with you as part of the booking process.
Any fees for services that have already been provided are non-refundable.
Who can witness our signatures on the Notice of Intended Marriage?
Authorised witnesses are listed above the signature fields on page 4 of the Notice of Intended Marriage.
If signing in Australia, authorised witnesses include a celebrant, JP, barrister, solicitor, medical practitioner, or a member of the Australian Federal Police or State/Territory Police.
If signing outside Australia, authorised witnesses include an Australian Consular Official, Australian Diplomatic Officer, notary public, or certain Commonwealth employees.
Can we choose our own celebrant?
One of the many advantages of saying “I do” with Officially Yours is that we take care of everything you need, including your celebrant, and we guarantee you’ll be delighted.
Where can we get married in Australia?
Officially Yours hosts Registry-Style marriages at The Old Court House in Wollongong. Alternatively, you may choose to skip the ceremony and simply complete the paperwork at a location of your choice, whether that be your home, a restaurant, a bar, a café, a park, the beach, or anywhere else you’d like to meet.
When will our marriage be registered?
In Australia, a marriage must be registered with the relevant state or territory authority within 14 days of being solemnised.
At Officially Yours, we are committed to registering your marriage on the same day it occurs, ensuring you receive your registered marriage certificate without delay.
Can you assist with a prospective spousal visa?
Yes! Our team has assisted many couples with the visa process and fully understands the requirements. Simply lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage, and we will organise the confirmation letter you need for your visa application.
Do you host vow renewal ceremonies?
Yes, absolutely! We would love to help you celebrate your renewed commitment. One of our celebrants will work with you to personalise your vow renewal ceremony, and you will receive a special commemorative certificate.
When should a Notice of Intended Marriage be lodged?
A completed and signed Notice must be lodged with an authorised celebrant at least one calendar month, and no more than 18 months, before your proposed wedding date.
In exceptional circumstances, you may be eligible for a “shortening of time,” allowing your marriage to proceed without the minimum notice. Our team can assist you if you believe you may qualify.
How do we lodge our Notice of Intended Marriage?
Your Notice can be lodged from anywhere in the world, at any time. Simply scan each page or take clear photos and email them to:
